Established about the end of October, 1978, Don A. Swofford & Associates has grown into a leading architectural, planning and interior design firm acknowledged nationally for historical building conservation and classical architecture.   The firm offers all services required for the complete project, and is rapidly expanding into the design-build field.

Don Swofford, FAIA, the founder, leads the office of dedicated architects, landscape architects, engineers and interns.  We are committed to providing personalized and responsive service for every client.

Don A. Swofford FAIA                                                  
Architect/Principal

Founder and Chairman, Don is a pioneer in the conservation and preservation of our National Building Patrimony.  As such, he has excelled in the design of traditional infill within the historic context and counts many new traditional and classically based designs to his work.  A provocative thinker,  designer, and leader of the company, Don is a member of the College of Fellows and Chaired the Professional Interest areas of the American Institute of Architects.  In that position, he worked with executive leadership to form the Knowledge Communities of the Institute for the transmutation of Knowledge to a broader base of membership.   His work in the historic and traditional fields has gained national awards from the National Trust for Historic Preservation; namely The Nine Court Square banking offices and Farley, a fine Virginia Country Home.  Don’s Virginia and Local awards and numerous.

Don continues to share a member of the adjunct faculty of the School of Continuing Education at the University of Virginia, and is a frequent critic and guest lecturer at Texas A&M University, The University of Florida’s Preservation Institute:  Nantucket the University of Virginia and the University of Pennsylvania.   Don is also a faculty member of the AIA’s National Convention Faculty. 

Don’s focus at this time is to continue the work of the practice in commercial retail and offices, residential and large scale New Urbanism planning in Power Center.  He continues to lead a growing and emerging firm into the Twentieth Century.

Richard Boyd, PE
Architect
Richard is a licensed architect with over twenty years experience in the work of designing and building churches and residences.  Richard started with the firm  in 1988,  then joined the prestigious firm of Daggett & Grigg in Charlottesville.  He recently left D&G and has become an Associate of Don A Swofford.

Jay Monroe, ASLA, AIA
Architect, Landscape Architect  
Jay graduated from the University of Washington in 1976, then came to Charlottesville to work on his Masters in Landscape Architecture. Then, he and his wife Rosa traveled across the then Soviet Union on the Trans Siberian railway. What a trip that was. Jay practices out of a office near his home in Timberville, His design work predominantly focuses on a contemporary design utilizing historical references. To date, he has been the lead landscape architect on the McGlothlin Residence, Locust Hill and several county courthouses. 

Burak Erdem, AIA, PhD
Architect, Architectural Historian  
Burak's principal work is as a member of the faculty at the University of Virginia School of Architecture. His design specialty in architecture is eclectic with a focus on institutional and residential architecture. He came to Charlottesville to complete a PhD in Architecture and Architectural History. His subject is Bruno Taut, a German Architect who designed many public buildings and hotels in present day Turkey. His research capability and grasp of Virginia architecture is excellent.

Dave Sagarin
Marketing services; photography; graphic design
Dave has been an architectural photographer for over 30 years. He has taught architectural photography  and has been a writer and editor for photo magazines.  He was chosen by the Library of Congress to document the New York Subway System for the Historic America Engineering Record. Books illustrated include Essential New York and I Seem to be a Verb: the thoughts of R. Buckminster Fuller

Sagarin has documented most of  our projects for the past eight years, maintains this website as well as several others, and assists in the preparation of our proposals and award submissions.
